How warm can my greenhouse get?

We've had a few people ask us whether they can grow avocado or mango in a Harvst greenhouse. Unfortunately, no, you can't grow tropical fruit!

The greenhouse heating is intended to raise the internal temperature of the greenhouse a few degrees above outside temperature, to boost growth during colder months and prevent frost. The greenhouses are not designed to be fully sealed, so heat will escape through some of the gaps, more so on a windy day/night.

Having lights on during the day and heaters during the night is the best approach. We've found that keeping the greenhouse up to ten degrees C above outside temperature is feasible - especially with the smaller models. The S24 will get cooler as it's got a lot more surface area to lose heat.

If you have a Yard, Terrace or one of the earlier Sprout models, we recommend you seal the gap along the ridge with electrical tape to keep some more warmth in.

Here's a screenshot of one of our outdoor test S6 models, with lighting ( on with the green area ) and one heater cable ( on with the red area ). The greenhouse is set to maintain 15C which it can't quite manage during the night with one heater cable, but easily with the lighting. It's worth mentioning that the temp sensor is in soil in a tray, which sits on a shelf with lights - they give a lot of extra warmth to the soil.
