  1. Hi Neil Mine do the same; there's a lot of moisture being given off which isn't venting while the weather is cool. I've not had any problems leaving it closed, but if you wanted you could manually open it up for a while on a warmer day. It doesn't seem to affect the growth of the plants inside - mine are still growing well and my Terrace unit doesn't get any direct sunlight until early afternoon.
  2. Harvst smart control systems come provided with two soil sensors, which measure soil moisture and temperature. The moisture reading from the sensor can be used to give plants extra water when they are dry, and turn off timer watering if the soil is already wet. The temperature reading can be used to turn heaters on or off, and to regulate the temperature of our heated seed trays. All our greenhouses will measure temperatures, but only the mains powered models will be able to change the temperature via heating.   3. We're working on a new "live mode" view which will allow you to control more of your greenhouse without needing to wait for settings to update. You'll be able to turn heating and lights on and off, and also view the live sensor data.
  4. With all heaters and lights running, the greenhouse will use less than 120 Watts of power; that’s half an amp at 240 Volts. This won’t be full time, as the heaters are only turned on when the temperature drops below your set value. The solar powered greenhouses (which cannot be heated with electricity) use negligible power, supplied by a built in battery and small 5W solar panel.
  5. Yes, you can your own water tank or water butt. You will need to use the Harvst water pump, which connects to standard 13mm garden hose. We recommend you have no more than 5 metres of hose between the pump and the greenhouse, so your water butt can't be too far away. The pump is submersible (it stays under the water). It's a 45mm diameter cylinder that drops into a hole in the top of the tank or water butt. If you have a lid on your water butt, you'll need to drill a 15mm hole for the hose (and optional tank level sensor wire) to run through. You will need one or more pump exten
  6. Not at all; it's entirely optional. If you have soil to put the greenhouse on, that works well - but you might want to move the greenhouse between seasons while you prepare the ground for the next year. If you don’t have soil, you can use any suitable container for growing in. Containers have the advantage that you can remove them for soil replacement, cleaning, or simply growing in a different location. The raised bed is useful if you want your greenhouse to be a little higher, for better access; particularly the Terrace model which is quite low.
  7. Harvst mini greenhouses are fitted with a gutter and drain system on the roof to collect rain water in a small (25 litre) tank. The roof catchment area isn't huge, but it can collect a good amount of water in a decent rain shower. The in-built rainwater collection is not always enough for the greenhouse to be 100% self-sufficient, and definitely not enough in the summer, when you will need to top up manually. To help you top up at the right time, the app will send you a notification when your water tank is running low.
  8. Harvst mini greenhouses are fitted with wax based auto-vents, which open automatically when the temperature gets above 20 degrees C or so. The activation temperature is adjustable, by screwing the piston in and out of the mechanism. When the temperature drops again, the lids close, keeping your plants nice and cosy without getting too hot. Unlike standard greenhouses, which only have a small proportion of the roof opening automatically, the whole lid of a Harvst mini greenhouse opens up, allowing it to vent significantly more heat.
  9. The tank level sensor detects the presence or absence of water, and is intended to give you a warning before your tank runs out of water. We suggest you place the end of the sensor wire a few centimeters or inches above the pump, so that you have a day or two of self-watering before the pump runs dry. It's a good idea to fix the sensor wire to the hose using cable ties, to keep the sensor tip in the right place. If you are using a water butt, and have fitted your water pump a long way from the greenhouse, you can buy tank level sensor extension cables from us.

You can use a garden hose for the Harvst self watering system, but you’ll need to leave it turned on all the time, so that when the water valves in the greenhouse turn on, the watering system will sprinkle your plants. You can get a “T splitter” for your tap, so you can leave the main tap on, water on to the greenhouse, and have a separate outlet for filling watering cans or other garden uses. There is no limit to how long the hose can be (other than the practical issues of running it around your garden!) The greenhouse is fitted with a snap-on hose connector (Hozelock compatible). A
  11. The solar panel is mounted with an aluminium bracket, supplied with screws that go into wood. You can also use rawl plugs and screws into concrete or brick walls. The solar panel is approximately 240 x 180mm, and is lightweight. The cable supplied with the solar panel is 3m long, which should give you enough options for mounting it somewhere appropriate. It doesn't have to be in full sun, since the smart system doesn't use a huge amount of electricity.

  13. When you've set up your Harvst mini greenhouse, what should you choose for the self watering program? There's no definitive answer, as self watering / self irrigation depends so much on what you're growing and the time of year, but there are some broad guidelines we can give. You have a number of settings which can be set differently for each of the zones in the greenhouse: How long to run the pump (in seconds). The Harvst smart garden system is fitted with sensors that detect the capacitance of the soil, in other words how much the presence of the soil affects a small electric field set up around the sensor. The water content of the soil will affect the capacitance; wetter soil will be different from dry soil. However, every type of soil is different. How tightly the soil is packed around the sensor makes a difference, as do other things in the soil (such as fertilisers).
