Chris - Harvst 17
The grow lights provided in the Harvsters are powerful. Very powerful. Most neighbours wouldn't appreciate you having a lighthouse in the back garden, and that's effectively what a lit-up Harvster is like. If you live rurally, or your Harvster is parked out of the way, then you could run grow lights during the night, but generally, we recommend grow lights for winter mornings and evenings, to extend the day a little longer and to give a few extra lumens. The LED grow lights are not triggered by daylight; they use a timer, so you can choose when they come on. We still advocate the use of sunshine to grow your greens; the growlights are not powerful enough to be a substitute for a good south facing spot.
Sally 1
Just a quick questions as I haven't ever used these before. How long do i need to keep these on during the winter months?
Chris - Harvst 17
Hey Sally. We run our lights here at Harvst for around 14 hours a day - just like people, you need to let the plants rest a bit in the darkness too. Luckily we are in a rural area without many neighbours so don't have to worry about that ... but I do think about the wildlife which might otherwise be running through the yard in the wee dark hours. So from 8am to 10pm. It gives the plants a nice boost when the winter sun is so weak.
Rik - Harvst 2
I have mine on for about an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening just to extend the day. Seeds are germinating and the Carrots that I planted late summer seem to like that too.
Rik - Harvst 2
try having a look here at one of our blogs too: https://www.harvst.co.uk/why-do-i-need-grow-lights/
Ant 0
Neon lights (strip lights) are a really great way to increase photosynthesis rates and extend the growing season - they are very efficient in terms of the electricity they use, produce heat energy (to aid germination and growth rates) and are often free to acquire - I get them from offices that are being "shop fitted" as they would be thrown away - grow plants and reduce your ecological footprint too! What not to like.
